Hiking and Biking

Lace up!  Kirkland Lake has an abundance of trails and bush roads to be discovered. Basically, pick a spot on the map and head out. Bring water, fly dope (insect repellent), a GPS, a snack and a healthy sense of adventure. Oh, and be sure to tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return...cell phone coverage in some areas is patchy.

Into Urban walking? Visit Kinross Pond for a scenic 1 km loop. Looking for a bit more challenge? Visit Kap Kig Iwan Provinical Park  and take in the rushing white water, or tramp the bogs at Esker Lakes Provincial Park. If you really want to test yourself, hike to the top of Mount Cheminis.

While there are no maintained biking trails in Kirkland Lake, the highways, back roads and bush roads around town offer excellent and often challenging rides. For paved road enthusiasts, Airport Road to Nettie Lake and Highway 66 to Matachewan and eastwards to the Quebec boarder are local favourites. For off road enthusiasts, the trails in Esker Lakes Provincial Park (Highway 672) are fantastic, as are many of the bush roads along that highway towards Matheson.
